Eminent actress Bina Das Manna passed away at her residence here on Feb 1. She was 76. Born in 1934 at Bamunimaidam here, she was among the most well-known actresses of the state and acted in about 27 films including Sati Beula, Piyali Phukan, Natun Prithivi, Chaknaiya, Puwati Nishar Sapun, Lachit Barphukan, Narakasur, Itu Situ Bohutu, Ganga Silanir Phaki, Amar Ghar, Bhakta Prahlad, Sakuntala aru Sankar Joseph Ali, Megha Mukti, Bohagar Duparia, Ajala Kakai, Ranganodi, Bhai Bhai, among others. Her last recently released film was Mor Mone Tara. She was a drama enthusiast who worked in close association with stalwarts like Bishnu Rabha and Phani Sarma and she excelled in comic roles.
She was a regular actress with the All India Radio from 1952 to 1994 and she acted, directed and produced nearly 1500 plays. A state government artist pensioner, she was the recipient of a number of awards like the Bishnu Rabha Bota given by the Silpi Divas Udjapan Samiti and the Aideo Handique Bota. She was married to Bimal Chander Manna of Kolkata. She leaves behind a son.
Bina Das was just 15 years when she first acted in a Drama named 'Karaghar'directed by Sarbeswar Chakravorty in ArjyaNatya Hall situated near Sukreswar Ghat. In 1951 she first started her acting carrer. Her superb performance in Foni Sharma's 'Bhogjara' is really hard to forget. As her father passed away at an early age Bina Das besides looking after her brother and sister she used to work in Kamrup Mahila Shilpa Association.In 1952, she worked for the first time in Radio. Her first radio telecast was 'Maniram Dewan' Some of the assamese films where Bina Das acted are Sunil Ganguly's film "Sati Beula"(1953),"Piyali Phukan","Natun Prithivi", "Chaynika","Bhakt Prahlad","Puvati Nishar Sapun","Amar Ghar","Lachit Barpukan',"Narkashur","Etu Shetu Bohutu',"Maniram Dewan","Hirdayar Proujan", "Santan","Ganga Salinir Pakhi","Meghmukti","Raja Harichandra","Joge Joge Sangram","Bohagor Duporia","Pooja","Sakuntala and Shankar Joseph Ali","Nijara","Ajala Kokai","Bhai Bhai","Ranga Nadi","Kajiranga Kahani", "Sriman Maiman" etc. In 1972, she got married to Bimal Chandra Manna who belonged to Kolkata's Zamidar family.In 1974, her son Ashim was born.After four year's of marriage,Bina Das husband passed away and she returned back to her Father's home. Bina Das received Shilpa Pension from Assam Govt and Bishnu Rabha Award from Assam Shilpi Divas Udyapan.On 17th December,2008 Bina Das was honoured with "Aideo Sandiqoi Suwarini" from "Assam Lekhika Samaroh Samiti"
